The popular style of today’s’ music is whatever is in the mainstream. Not necessarily, if you do not follow the lead does that not make you an artist? K-os is trying something different and it is a good thing. He put a lot of diversity into his third album, Atlantis: Hymns For Disco. Merging reggae, old-school hip-hop, acoustic folk, indie-soul, rock, break-beat, alternative rock, and 80’s pop incredible it’s a perfect fit.
Listeners will experience true old-school hip-hop in the first track, “ELEctrik HeaT – the seekwiLL” blasting Jungle Brothers and James Brown samples drum-line with a twist of synths. Towards the middle, K-os slows it into a smooth solo making listeners permanently glued to this track. However, my ultimate favourite is K-os’s more of a personal song; “The Rain”, K-os shows his magic in this song with 50’s soft rock ballad in a jazzy-jam.
Another favourite track is “Sunday Morning”, as K-os quotes -- ‘If Saturday night was party night, Sunday Morning was family time in my house.” As well as it was for my family and I, this song opened the memory door of those times. My parents and close family members would gather for an evening of music, food and good conversations, the younger generation would sit and listen to our elders talk of the times when they were growing up, a true learning experience. “Sunday Morning” is the perfect song to surround your ears with and travel back to the easier times with family and friends.
Level of consciousness: 9 out of 10… Virgin Records quote –“K-os is the perfect artist to appeal to anyone that is open-minded about music.” Agreed, if you have not experience his music powers; go get the album and listen to it.
